All about Lunsar town
It is estimated that around 40,000 people currently reside in Lunsar, making us one of the largest towns in the region as well as being one of the most important Sierra Leonean industrial centres outside of Freetown.
Lunsar is a major mining town that can be found at the base of Massaboin Hill. The hill is home to valuable iron ore stores that can be mined and sold for a profit.
Our towns original name ‘Run-Sar’ derives from the Temne term ‘Sar’, meaning stone in English. The modern name of Lunsar is a continuation of this mining heritage that dates back to the colonial era.
Temne is the local dialect of Lunsar, and although some locals do speak English it would be helpful to learn a few key phrases before making the trip to our town.
The climate of Sierra Leone is naturally a warm one given our proximity to the equator, the driest months of the year tend to be between October and May. Expect the temperature to reach pretty high levels during the SiS Tour de Lunsar.
