Riding through Sierra Leone

by Luke Williams

When most people think of Sierra Leone, cycling may not be the first thing that comes to mind (unless you’re familiar with the SiS Tour de Lunsar of course!). In reality, our country actually has a real up and coming presence in the cycling world and some people want to explore this even more.

British cyclist Oscar Chamberlain has been riding across the vast continent of Africa over the past few months and recently had the pleasure of heading straight through Lunsar. As a team one of our core objectives over the next few years is to transform Lunsar into a thriving hub for all things cycling in Sierra Leone and west Africa as a whole, so naturally we were eager to find out why Oscar chose Lunsar as one of the stops on his adventure.

Oscar says that “Sierra Leone is beautiful to ride through when things are going smoothly, everywhere is interesting!”

Sierra Leone has so much to offer, that people around the world miss out on seeing on a daily basis. Whether it be our beautiful landscape, local delicacies such as the famous Cassava leaf stew, or simply the friendly welcome that people receive upon visiting the town of Lunsar.

Oscar himself was amazed by the kindness of the local people, who are amongst some of the poorest in the world. Posting on Instagram, Oscar said that the Bayoh family provided him with some of the tastiest fruit he had ever tasted, and local mechanic Taram even welcomed him into his home for the night.

“This trip would have been 100 times harder without the support of these people” said Oscar.

Of course, it hasn’t been all plain sailing for the Brit, who has faced many challenges on his way through Sierra Leone such as broken-down vehicles, punctures, and having to cross national borders whilst trying to obtain a visa. This is all part of the fun though, with plenty more still to come for Oscar on his travels.
