AFRICAP Apparel x FAMBUL junior race report

The AFRICAP. Apparel x FAMBUL junior race began with 67 riders ready to contest the 72-kilometre route to Port Loko and back. After a ceremonial lap of the town circuit, the race departed and the 2024 Fundsmith Tour de Lunsar was officially underway.

With still more than half the race to go, C2C Bonnet’s Ishmael Kanu broke free from the peloton, establishing the first breakaway of the race. After an impressive effort on his own, Kanu was brought back by the bunch.

On the way back to Lunsar, the race passed Rogberi Junction, and with the finish line in sight attacks began to fly.

Ibrahim Bangura of Lunsar Cycling Team and Ibrahim P. Kargbo of C2C Bonnet managed to build a small advantage over the peloton, but it was brought back impressively by Amadou Sow of Flames. Sow has been one of the standout performers of the 2023/24 season, taking overall victory in the junior division of the Salone Cup and he came into the race a hot favourite.

However, Abu Bakarr Kamara of Lunsar Cycling Team had other ideas. The young rider powered clear and took the bell for the last lap of Lunsar alone. By the finish line, he was 29 seconds ahead of the chasers and had plenty of time to celebrate his victory.
